Why Participate?
The Prevention 1st Challenge is a strategic tool counties can use to improve health by focusing on healthy eating, physical activity, healthy weight, and tobacco use cessation. Each year in this state, nearly 35,000 deaths and 184,000 hospitalizations are linked to tobacco use, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and overweight.
The Prevention 1st Challenge will build on the progress seen with the statewide NC Prevention Report Card by partnering with counties to help them develop and promote their own county Prevention Report Cards. Similar to the state report card, county report cards will have grades for physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use and can be used to:
Establish a baseline for the key prevention efforts that we all want to bring to our communities,
Track changes over time, and
Help bring new and necessary partners to the table.
Benefits of Participation
Through participation in the Prevention 1st Challenge, counties will be able to
Complete a Prevention Audit to assess needs and assets related to prevention (See potential data sources to help you complete the audit.)
Receive a Prevention Report Card to obtain immediate feedback on initial and subsequent audits (Learn more about grades)
Create a Strategic Prevention Plan using the guide provided and resources provided to address priority prevention issues identified by the audit and report card
In addition, participating counties will receive
Regular emails with Challenge updates and prevention news and tips for use in communications
Reports of county-wide participation (data reported in the aggregate)
County Implementation Plan
Step 1: Establish local team.
We recommend creating a team with local partners who can work together to accomplish the following tasks:
a. Data collection
b. Worksite (local) Prevention Champion recruitment.
c. Promotions to specific groups in the community
d. Media and other communications
Step 2: Collect data and complete Prevention Audit to receive baseline Prevention Report Card.
Step 3: Using the guide provided in the resources section, develop an initial Strategic Prevention Plan--a plan to make an “A” (i.e. set goals; identify strategies, issues, and priority populations).
Step 4: Develop a communications and media plan and recruit Prevention Champions
Step 5: Hold a kick-off event.
Step 6: Schedule and develop ongoing events and other promotional strategies.
Step 7: Make initial changes.
Step 8: Evaluate progress by completing the Prevention Audit again to receive an updated Prevention Report Card that reflects policy and
environmental changes that have been made.
Step 9: Modify Strategic Prevention Plan as necessary and repeat above steps as needed.
