Why should households participate?

What are the benefits of participation?

How does a household implement the Challenge?

Why Participate?

The Prevention 1st Challenge is a strategic tool households can use to improve the health of household members. By creating and maintaining policies(or "rules") and environments that support healthy eating, physical activity, and quitting tobacco use, households can encourage healthy behaviors. Poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and tobacco use lead to many preventable diseases such as Type II Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and many cancers. Household environments and rules such as not allowing smoking in or around your home, limiting T.V. time, and keeping healthy snacks available, are essential to promoting and ensuring the health of everyone in your home.

Benefits of Participation

Through participation in the Prevention 1st Challenge, households will be able to

  • Complete a Prevention Audit to assess needs and assets related to prevention
  • Receive a Prevention Report Card to obtain immediate feedback based on audit responses (Learn more about Prevention Grades); and
  • Create a Strategic Prevention Plan using the guide provided and resources provided to address priority prevention issues identified by the audit and report card.

  • Household Implementation Plan

Step 1: Encourage all the members of your household to participate in the Challenge.

Step 2: Collect information and complete a Prevention Audit to receive your household Prevention Report Card.

Step 3: Using the guide provided in the resources section, develop an initial Strategic Prevention Plan--a plan to make an “A” (i.e. set goals; identify strategies, systems, and issues).

    Step 4: Make initial changes.

Step 5: Evaluate progress by completing the Prevention Audit again to receive an updated Prevention Report Card that reflects policy and environmental changes that have been made.

Step 6: Modify Strategic Prevention Plan as necessary and repeat above steps as needed.

Let's rise to the Challenge and put prevention first!
